Create and restore game-server backups

Protect saves and configuration before updates, file changes, or migrations.

Decide what to protect

Back up saves or worlds, game configuration, plugins or mods, and any data needed to recreate your setup. A copy on the same service should not be your only backup.

Check whether your hosting panel includes a backup tool. Available backup storage and limits depend on the service.

Create a consistent backup

Ask players to disconnect and stop the server normally. Wait for saves to finish before making the backup.

Use the panel's backup function if available, or download the relevant folders over SFTP. Give the backup a name that includes the date and game version.

Check that the resulting archive or downloaded files are complete.

Restore carefully

Restoring a backup can replace current files and remove progress made afterward. Download a separate copy of the current state before you proceed.

Stop the server, restore the chosen files, and check the configured save path. Match the software version expected by the backup.

Test the result

Start the server and review the console. Join to confirm that the expected world, saves, and settings are present.

Keep the previous backup until you have verified the restored server.
